Learning Beyond the Classroom

In her first year of graduate study, Yang Yixiao discovered the richness of interdisciplinary learning. Through diverse coursework and collaborative group projects with peers from various academic backgrounds, she gained new perspectives and broadened her ways of thinking.

As her studies progressed, she took part in several field research initiatives, joining provincial lab projects and off-campus investigations. These experiences brought academic theory to life and allowed her to better understand the social realities behind the data.

She also co-authored a paper with Professor Ian based on in-depth fieldwork. Serving as a translator and cultural mediator during this process gave her a deeper appreciation for the differences—and the harmony—between Eastern and Western perspectives.

“These experiences taught me that practical engagement deepens learning. The more I explored, the more I understood what I wanted to pursue,” Yang says.

Managing a Busy Schedule

Yang describes herself as someone who thrives on trying new things—but balancing coursework, research, student responsibilities, and internships wasn’t always easy. “There were times I felt like there just wasn’t enough time in the day.”

To stay on track, she created detailed daily plans, prioritized urgent tasks, and used smaller time blocks for flexible activities. She focused on one task at a time to maintain momentum and stay mentally present.

“Even when you're stretched thin, passion and responsibility can push you forward,” she says. “One task at a time, you get through it all.”

Finding the Right Career Path

Like many students, Yang felt uncertain when it came to choosing a career. She actively explored her options through internships in government departments, private companies, and later, the internet sector—where she ultimately found her fit as a product manager.

“Through each experience, I came to understand what different industries demand, and more importantly, what resonates with me personally.”

She recommends talking with alumni, participating in career events, and asking honest questions during internships: Is this the kind of work that excites me? Does it give me a sense of value and purpose?

On Becoming an Outstanding Graduate

Yang believes that “excellence” can take many forms. For her, it came from a balance of academic work, social practice, and student leadership.

“Whether you’re aiming for research, public service, or creative projects, what matters most is a sincere commitment to your own growth.”

Her advice to students:

1.Play to your strengths. Choose platforms that align with your skills—whether organizing, researching, or performing.

2.Build transferable skills. Communication, time management, and resilience matter across all roles.

3.Explore meaningfully. Don’t accumulate experiences just for a polished résumé. Every choice should help you better understand yourself.

“You may not balance every role perfectly, but if you keep investing in your growth, you’ll become someone you’re proud of.”

On Setbacks and Self-Reflection

Yang is candid about moments of regret—like not taking full advantage of the academic resources available in the early stages of her program. But she views these moments as part of her evolution.

“Failure can feel painful, but it’s also a mirror. It helps you understand your limits—and your resilience.”

To peers facing uncertainty or pressure, she offers this: “Everyone experiences setbacks. What matters is how you bounce back. Trust your effort. It will pay off.”
