On Learning and Growth

For Zhang Zheng, learning goes far beyond textbooks. “Everyone at this stage already has their own methods for handling coursework,” she says. “But no matter the method, consistency is the most important key.”

She believes that valuable learning also comes from how we think, interact, and grow as individuals. “Read more. Talk to people. Practice often. You'll be amazed at how much you gain.”

Zhang also advocates for balance. “We all feel pressure. Don’t forget to enjoy life outside the classroom—go out, enjoy nature, eat something delicious, meet up with friends. Sometimes, recharging is what allows us to move forward stronger.”

When Facing Challenges

Zhang reflects that while her master's journey didn’t bring many major difficulties, temporary challenges were inevitable. “Most problems can be solved through open communication and a proactive mindset.”

And when something feels truly overwhelming? “Don’t be too hard on yourself,” she advises. “Seek help from those around you—your professors, classmates, friends. People are more willing to help than you might expect. We’re stronger together.”

Career Planning and Further Study

Zhang encourages students to be action-takers, not just dreamers. “Peking University offers so many opportunities to explore and even make mistakes—it’s a safe space to try.”

·Interested in public service? Try student programs like Duxing and Zhixing, which provide hands-on experience in government offices.

·Curious about the private sector? Keep an eye on platforms like Nanyan Career and PKU Career, which organize corporate visits and events.

·Thinking of further studies? Talk to your advisors, and don’t hesitate to ask alumni for their insights.

“There are so many ways to find your path. Don’t let anxiety cloud your view. Trust the process, and life will give you your answer.”

A Word on the Outstanding Graduate Award

“I never imagined I’d be selected,” Zhang shares modestly. “I’m truly grateful to my school, my professors, and my classmates. I’ve learned and grown so much along the way.”

Her advice to others: “Whether you’re a well-rounded achiever or someone excelling in one area, give it a shot. The title doesn’t define you—but it may just recognize what you’ve already become.”

Lessons on Failure

“People often define failure by outcomes,” Zhang reflects. “But to me, every step taken has value. External validation will never feel as fulfilling as inner contentment.”

She encourages others to form their own definition of success: “Each so-called failure helps us eliminate wrong answers and move closer to who we are. Everyone is a unique landscape—nurture your own growth with passion and freedom.”

Message to Fellow Students

“Enjoy your time at university. As long as you’re growing just a little each day, that’s more than enough.”
