Reflections on Learning and Growth
Tang Hui, a 2022 master's student at the School of Urban Planning and Design, Peking University, humbly admits that he doesn’t see himself as an authority on “how to learn.” In his words, “Anyone who’s made it to our school is already successful in learning.” Instead, Tang offers thoughtful reflections on his experience:

“Graduate study is very different from undergraduate life,” he says. “It’s more about conducting independent research and participating in projects. Interest is the best teacher. When you’re genuinely passionate, learning becomes not only easier but also enjoyable.”
Tang emphasizes self-reconciliation—choosing topics that you either like or can learn to like. For him, while he has strong internal motivation for research, distractions in modern life are real and difficult to overcome. His solution: structured breaks and rewards—whether it’s gaming, hiking, or traveling.
“And never hesitate to reach out,” he adds. “Our mentors and peers are our greatest resources.”

On Choosing the Next Step
Tang’s journey to doctoral study was marked by diligence and lessons learned the hard way. He offers three key pieces of advice for those considering a Ph.D:
1.Choose a research area that interests you—but don’t narrow it too soon.
2.Learn about potential advisors. A good fit matters.
3.Reach out to multiple professors to broaden your opportunities.
Tang also advises others to guard against self-doubt and burnout. “Your mindset makes all the difference. Stay optimistic, keep trying, and don’t isolate yourself during tough moments.”

Tips for Becoming an “Outstanding Graduate”
“When I first started grad school, I never imagined I’d be named an Outstanding Graduate,” Tang shares. “Everyone at Peking University is so accomplished—I didn’t want to set lofty goals and increase my anxiety.”
His advice for future students? “Focus on doing what you love. If you excel at something, apply for the Outstanding Graduate title. But remember: the most important thing isn’t the title. It’s being someone you yourself admire.”

Gratitude to Mentors
Tang expresses deep gratitude to his advisors, Professor Wu Jiansheng and Professor Peng Jian.
“Professor Wu guided me through my first year of graduate studies, laying a solid foundation. Professor Peng has been mentoring me since I was recommended for admission during my senior year of undergrad. He introduced me to the field of landscape ecology and land use, and also taught me how to navigate life and work with balance.”
As Tang prepares for the next chapter, he carries with him both academic insight and life wisdom. “I hope to read more, travel more, and spend less time scrolling through streaming platforms.”
